More Colour & Spirit-Liftingness! and to e-flurrying. From Brother Chip
… when I schemed to create a musical encounter between yourself, Andy Summers and Max Roach.
Not sure I ever told you this, but when I played the first Fripp-Summers recording for Max in the kitchen of his then Greenwich, Connecticut home, he listened with considerable interest, and at one point perked right up and told me, “This is good…I wouldn’t even have to change the way I play.”
Summers, Fripp & Roach is one of those interesting projects that power the imagination (at the least, my imagination) but which didn’t actualise. Cf earlier diary entries…
Wed., Jun 4, 2008 Then moving to Frippertronics at Inroads, August 1981, a week of benefit performances to support a small acting troupe in an 80-seat theatre, SoHo, NYC. One night Chip Stern, the good guy jazz drummer, music enthusiast & writer, brought Max Roach to listen: this the first of several happy encounters with Max. I don’t have heroes but, if I did, Max is one of them.
Mon., Sep 7, 1998 Max, a true Hero, came to see King Crimson in Houston in 1981. I asked him his "Why did you leave Yes?" question - "What was it like to work with Charlie Parker?". Max, a gentlemen, told me. But that is another story. There was talk in 1982 of a Roach / Summers / Fripp album, but it didn't happen. Max, a model to all players, last came to see Crimson at the Town Hall, NY, in 1995.
18.11 Snacks & nibbles put out for about-to-be-arriving local pals.
WillyFred is in the bedroom, so as not to disgrace himself in company, and has his own pals there: Sydne Snake & the Minx’s white furry booties.
20.46 An enjoyable, fun evening. Washing up done, WillyFred is awaiting the full attention that is his right & due.
